Optimizing Your Health With Clean Beauty

I was recently diagnosed with an autoimmune condition called Hashimotos Thyroiditis. It is an autoimmune disease of the thyroid gland where my body cannot product enough thyroid hormone for my body due to my body attacking itself. Luckily, I’m on a great treatment plan and can manage this long-term! Part of the treatment plan involves re-examining what I’m putting in my body (food), and what I’m putting on my body (beauty products) that directly impact immune function and hormonal balance.

THE TRUTH ABOUT BEAUTY PRODUCTS

Did you know that most makeup and beauty products on the market are harmful to your health?

They contain ingredients that are illegal in most other countries like chemicals, artificial colorings, heavy metals and carcinogens that can disrupt your endocrine system (impacting your hormonal balance which in turn can affect many different functions of your body including fertility, digestion, cognitive function, and more), and can contribute to chronic illnesses such as autoimmune issues.

WHY I MADE THE SWITCH TO SAFER BEAUTY

Our skin is our body’s biggest organ and absorbs whatever we put on it.

I no longer want to use harmful makeup that can disrupt my hormones, endocrine system, gut health, and immune function. This is why I’ve switched to investing in the only clean and safe beauty products on the market by Beautycounter (www.beautycounter.com/shivangirao). They are focused on education, advocacy, and scientific research in partnership with academic institutions to create new safety standards in the US.

I also was shocked to learn that less than 25% of beauty products marketed to women of color are marked as safe. I’ve primarily used MAC Cosmetics and other makeup brands like Sephora, NARS, and more. All of these products were likely contributing to my overall health, especially my gut health and autoimmune disease. As a woman of color, I thought I was using products that were safe, but I learned over time that I was wrong. When I discovered the truth thanks to friends who had already made the switch to safer makeup, I also made the switch and committed to #betterbeauty with Beautycounter. I feel a difference in my well-being and haven’t looked back!

SAFER STANDARDS & SMALLER FOOTPRINT

Beautycounter products prohibit over 1,500+ harmful ingredients that are found in all other beauty products on the market.

They’ve screened over 1,000 chemicals for their impact on health and our planet in an effort to educate and set new standards. To date, Beautycounter has offset 4,259 metric tons of CO2 emissions which is the equivalent of planting 14,200 trees. They are truly committed to being a sustainable company and are conscious of their environmental footprint. From moving towards using glass bottles instead of plastic, to changing their packaging and shipping practices, to being primarily plant-based in their products, they have been able to make a positive impact on our planet.
